Do not copy a tax threshold from another country. Verify the rules for your destination and the tax terms of the route you actually choose.
List the contents as they actually are
Prepare a clear product description, quantity and value for each item in the parcel. Keep the order and payment records available in case the carrier or customs office asks for evidence. A vague name or deliberately understated value can delay clearance or create additional costs.
Use plain product words that identify the goods. “Cotton T-shirt, one piece” tells the reviewer more than “gift” or “fashion item”. Record the amount actually paid and its currency, and make sure the parcel description agrees with the items inside. If the platform asks for additional classification fields, follow the instructions for the destination rather than guessing a code.
- What is the item and how many units are inside?
- Which order record supports the stated value?
- Does the recipient name and address match the required documents?
Illustrative declaration note: “1 cotton T-shirt; value ¥120; paid in CNY.” Replace the item, quantity, amount and currency with your actual order. This is a description example, not a customs value ruling.

Check the rules for the actual destination
Import thresholds, taxes and restricted categories vary by country and can depend on product type and declared value. This checklist does not provide a universal duty rate. Check the current customs guidance for your destination before assuming an item or value qualifies for an exemption.
Perfume, food and electronics can also raise product-specific questions. Confirm eligibility before combining them into a parcel.
Search the destination customs authority for the product category, personal-import rules and required documents. Check the date of the guidance and whether it covers parcels arriving by the route you selected. If you cannot tell which rule applies, ask the carrier or a qualified customs adviser before submitting an expensive or restricted parcel.
Read the route’s tax terms
A shipping price may cover transportation only, while another route may describe tax-inclusive handling. Read exactly what is included and who pays a charge collected after arrival. Do not infer tax coverage from a route name or a higher price.
Keep room in your budget for a possible carrier handling fee or import charge when the selected route does not clearly include it.
Write down the route answer in three separate lines: shipping paid now, import tax or duty included or excluded, and any carrier collection or handling charge mentioned in the terms. If the route screen is silent on one line, leave it unresolved and confirm it before assuming the parcel is fully paid.
If customs asks for more information
Use the parcel tracking and carrier message to identify the exact request. Common supporting records can include the order confirmation, payment record and a description of the contents. Provide documents that match the real transaction rather than creating a new amount or changing the item name to fit a hoped-for tax result.
Keep the tracking number, carrier contact and any response deadline together. If you need to challenge an assessed amount, follow the destination authority or carrier process for that parcel; the product card price alone is not enough to settle a customs valuation question.
Stay reachable during clearance
Use accurate recipient contact details and follow the parcel tracking. If the carrier requests an invoice, proof of payment or clarification of contents, answer with information consistent with the actual order. Keep the final customs or delivery record with the parcel number.
Before shipping, confirm that the recipient can receive email, phone or carrier messages at the address used for the parcel. A correct declaration can still be delayed if a document request goes unanswered.
